Last Week's Action, March 27 - April 2

It was an exciting weekend of tennis in the Big Ten. Several matches were very closely contested
with a lot at stake. Here's what happened. (Top-50 national rankings from ITA, 3/28.)

#2 Ohio State now leads the Big Ten alone with a record of 5-0. They defeated Iowa and Nebraska on the road with identical 7-0 scores.

#30 Wisconsin is now in a tie for second place in the Big Ten lead with a 4-1 record. They defeated Northwestern 4-2 at home, but later lost for the first time in conference, to Illinois at home 2-4 in a very tight match.

#18 Michigan is up to 4-1 in the Big Ten, tied for second place. They defeated Indiana 7-0 and Purdue 6-1 on the road.

#19 Northwestern is 3-2 in the Big Ten. They lost to Wisconsin 2-4 on the road but then defeated Minnesota 4-2 on the road in a close match that ended with Konrad Zieba of NU besting Felix Corwin of MN in tennis's version of OT, a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7).

#33 Minnesota is 3-2 in conference. They defeated Illinois 4-3 at home. That match was very tight, coming down to the third set at #6 singles, a match in which Marino Alpeza of MN came back to defeat Vuk Budic of IL 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. But they later lost to Northwestern 2-4 at home in another close match.

#28 Illinois is now 3-2 in the Big Ten after a grueling weekend of tennis. First they lost to Minnesota 3-4 on the road in a long, tough match and then defeated conference-leading Wisconsin 4-2 on the road. That match came down to #1 singles, in which Aleks Vukic of IL defeated Lamar Remy of WI in another late-match third-set tiebreaker in the Big Ten last week, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6.

Penn State jumped up to 3-2 in conference play with wins at Nebraska 5-2 and Iowa 4-3, both on the road.

#44 Indiana is 2-3 in the Big Ten. They lost to Michigan 0-7 at home and defeated Michigan State 4-3 at home.

Purdue is 2-3 in conference. They defeated Michigan State 7-0 at home. They later lost to Michigan 1-6 at home.

Iowa is 1-4 in conference. They lost to Ohio State 0-7 at home and Penn State 3-4 at home. They also defeated DePaul 7-0 at home last week.

Nebraska is 0-5 in conference. They lost to Penn State 2-5 and Ohio State 0-7 at home.

Michigan State is 0-5 in the conference. They lost to Purdue 0-7 on the road. They also lost to Indiana 3-4 on the road in a tight match.

On the national scene, #1 Wake Forest defeated #3 Virginia 5-2 at home in the ACC on Sunday. This was a closely contested match, with a number of players ranked highly in the nation facing off against each other. Four of six singles matches went three sets.
