Last Week's Action, April 3-9

Last week was one with few close matches in Big Ten tennis. Here's the summary:

#2 Ohio State keeps on marching in the Big Ten lead with a record of 7-0. They beat 7-0 Indiana and Purdue 7-0 at home last week. (Top-50 national team rankings from ITA, 4/3)

#15 Michigan is up to 6-1 in the Big Ten, now alone in second place. They beat Minnesota 5-2 and then had a solid win against Wisconsin 4-0 at home in an important match between second-place teams.

#29 Wisconsin is now 5-2 in conference. They defeated Michigan State 7-0 on the road, but lost to Michigan on the road 0-4 in an important match of second-place teams.

#21 Northwestern is up to 5-2 in the Big Ten. They defeated Nebraska 7-0 at home and then had a tight match with Iowa at home. NW won 4-3, with the decisive match coming at #6 singles, in which Jason Seidman of NW defeated Jason Kerst of IA 7-6, 7-6. This was the only close team match last week in the conference.

#27 Illinois is also now 5-2 in a three-way tie for third place in the conference after defeating Iowa 6-1 and Nebraska 4-0 at home.

#32 Minnesota is 4-3 in conference. They lost to Michigan 2-5 and then beat Michigan State 6-1 on the road.

Penn State stands at 4-3 in conference play. They lost to Purdue 2-5 and defeated Indiana 5-2 at home. These were two fairly close matches.

Purdue is up to 3-4 in conference. They defeated Penn State 5-2 and then lost to Ohio State 0-7, both matches on the road.

#45 Indiana is 2-5 in the Big Ten. They lost to Ohio State 0-7 and Penn State 2-5 on the road. Iowa is now 1-6 in the conference. They lost to Illinois 1-6 and then to Northwestern 3-4 on the road. The NW match was a close one.

Michigan State is 0-7 in the Big Ten. They lost to Wisconsin 0-7 in a match that was closer than it looks on paper and then lost to Minnesota 1-6 at home in another fairly close match.

Nebraska is also 0-7 in conference. They lost to Northwestern 0-7 and Illinois 0-4 on the road.

In news from the top on the national scene, #3 Baylor lost to #8 Oklahoma State 3-4 over the weekend. OK came back from 1-3 down to win on the road. Also, in a very close match in the ACC, #4 Virginia defeated #11 North Carolina 4-3. #5 Southern Cal, on the road, lost to #19 Stanford 1-4 and then defeated #12 Cal 4-0 in two important Pac-12 matches last weekend.
